Johnny Herbert has welcomed Sergio Perez’s return to Formula One next season with Cadillac, saying the pairing “makes sense”.
Perez has yet to race in any category since leaving Red Bull at the conclusion of last year, but he has been extensively associated with the new Cadillac squad that will debut next season.
The 35-year-old Mexican driver is a leading candidate for one of the two places on the new American team, with a desire to return to the summit of motorsport.
Based on Liam Lawson’s troubles at Red Bull and his surprise relegation to Racing Bulls after only two races, many people have rallied behind Perez, who has faced criticism for his performance with Max Verstappen.
Herbert is among many who believe Lawson’s troubles underline the fact that Perez performed better than expected and would be a good fit for Cadillac.
“Yes, Sergio Perez to Cadillac makes sense,” Herbert informed SambaSlots. “Looking back, he did a wonderful job at Red Bull.
“It was not ideal. He did not win a title, but he demonstrated that he possessed some raw speed. The only thing lacking in comparison to Max was most likely consistency.
Cadillac has always identified an experienced driver as a critical component of its driver lineup choice, which Herbert believes plays into Perez’s hands.
“He’d be good for Cadillac, a good driver to have on board for Cadillac because, coming into the sport, they’ll have someone with that experience which would only benefit them, in the car, in the factory and also in the various American markets,” he told me.
“I am sure that has been considered, but it is also Sergio’s passion. It’s not like he went away and said, “That’s it.” He’s still fired up about Formula One.
“That is fantastic to see. And I believe that would be a fantastic fit.”
