A 10-year-old East Sandwich kid died in a dirt bike incident at a Wareham motocross track on June 15. The community is in sorrow. The boy’s death was the second tragic crash on the track in three years.
Colby Andrew Lippincott, 10, was sent to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, where he died.
Diamond MX motocross track, where the tragedy occurred, announced a GoFundMe effort in memory of the kid on its Facebook page.
Lippincott was well-known for his academic achievements and enthusiasm for adventure sports such as dirt biking. He was very interested in his community and church.
“Colby was a diligent Honors student at Sandwich Middle High School where he excelled in Engineering, Math & Science,” according to his death certificate. “His teacher’s voted him as ‘Most Likely to Break a World Record.'”
The obituary states that a scholarship fund has been established to honor the boy’s memory.
According to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, emergency responders went to Diamond MX on Atwood Farm Way in East Wareham shortly after 12:35 p.m. in response to a 911 call of a dirt bike crash.
Course operator said “all safety measures were in place.”
“With sadness in our hearts, we must address a tragedy that occurred today at the track,” Diamond MX stated in a Facebook post. “The Diamond MX family extends our deepest condolences to the rider’s family and all involved.”
The corporation stated that all safety precautions were in place at the time.
“Diamond MX is committed to providing a safe riding experience,” the statement read. “We can safely state that all safety precautions were implemented and are in place now. The motocross community enjoys riding because it gives us with pleasure, freedom, and an escape. With that said, we are aware of the risks involved.”
Diamond MX was closed the day following the collision, the circuit’s management stated, “out of respect for the family and track employees.”
Detectives from the State Police are conducting an investigation. Furthermore, Wareham police said that an officer responding to the site was engaged in a car collision and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Ava Pioppi, a 13-year-old Carver girl, died in a track crash in September 2021. Prior to being sold and renamed, the track was known as Wareham MX and was under different ownership.
